Before You Remove PDF Password Free — Know Which Type You Have
PDF security uses two completely different mechanisms. Identifying which type applies to your document determines everything — which method will work, how long it will take, and whether you need the original password at all. If you can open the PDF but cannot print or select text, you have an owner/permissions password and can remove it without typing any code. If the document refuses to open entirely, you have a user/open password and must know the correct password before any method will work.
Remove PDF Password Free — Method 1: Google Chrome
No installation, no accounts. Open Chrome, drag your PDF into a new tab (or press Ctrl+O on Windows, ⌘+O on Mac), and enter the password when prompted. Once the document is open, click the download icon in the top-right PDF toolbar — or press Ctrl+P, change the printer to “Save as PDF”, and save. The file Chrome saves has no password. This works reliably for owner passwords and for user/open passwords once you’ve entered the correct one.
Method 2 — Microsoft Edge (Windows 10/11)
Open the PDF in Edge and enter the password. Right-click anywhere on the document and select Save as, then choose a location and save. The new file opens without any password prompt. Alternatively, press Ctrl+P, select Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer, and print to a new file. Both routes produce an unlocked copy in under a minute.
Method 3 — macOS Preview
Open the PDF in Preview and enter the password. Go to File → Export as PDF. In the export dialog, leave both the Password and Verify fields completely blank, then save. The exported file has no password. A faster alternative on Mac is File → Print → PDF (bottom-left) → Save as PDF, which achieves the same result in slightly fewer steps.
Method 4 — Google Drive (Any Browser)
Upload the PDF to Google Drive, right-click the file, and choose Open with → Google Docs. Once it converts, go to File → Download → PDF Document. The downloaded file has no password restriction. The caveat: Google Docs converts through its own format first, which can shift complex layouts, break tables, and alter formatting. For bank statements and government documents with precise layouts, Chrome or Edge gives cleaner results.
Use our PDF compress tool to reduce file size after unlocking.
Method 5 — iPhone and Android
On iPhone, open the PDF in the Files app and enter the password. Tap the Share icon, then Print. On the print preview screen, perform a pinch-out gesture on the preview thumbnail — this expands the PDF as a standalone document. Tap Share again and save to Files as a PDF. On Android, open the PDF in Chrome, enter the password, then tap the three dots → Share → Print → Save as PDF. The saved copy has no password.
Method 6 — Adobe Acrobat (When Nothing Else Works)
Acrobat Pro handles files that resist the browser methods — documents with server-based security policies, digital rights management, or digital signatures. Open the PDF, go to Tools → Protect → Encrypt → Remove Security. For an open password, click OK to remove it. For a permissions password, enter it in the confirmation box and click OK, then save. Acrobat preserves internal links, bookmarks, form fields, and metadata — something the print-to-PDF method cannot guarantee. A 7-day free trial is available.

India-Specific: Password Formats for Common Documents
A large number of users get stuck not because they don’t know how to unlock a PDF but because they don’t know what the password is. Indian government and banking documents follow fixed, predictable formats — and knowing them saves a lot of frustration.
For ITR passwords, the most common mistake is capitalisation — the PAN must be in lowercase and the date of birth must be exactly DDMMYYYY with no separators, no spaces, no hyphens. If the standard format fails on Form 16, check the email from your HR team — it almost always mentions the password format in the email body.
Remove PDF Password Free — Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, for documents you own or have been given authorised access to. Removing a password from your own bank statement, ITR, or a file someone shared with you is completely legal. What is not permitted is bypassing protection on content you don’t have permission to access.
No. Chrome, Edge, and Preview create a new copy with identical content — only the password layer is removed. The exception is Google Drive, which converts through Google Docs first and can subtly affect complex layouts.
When you remove PDF password free using browser methods, only the protection layer is stripped — content stays identical.
For Indian government documents, try the standard formats in the infographic above — most use systematic, recoverable passwords. For personal documents you encrypted yourself, recovery tools exist but only work on older, weakly encrypted PDFs. Modern AES-256 encryption is effectively unbreakable. The most practical solution is to re-download from the original source.
The most common mistake is capitalisation. The PAN must be lowercase (abcde1234f, not ABCDE1234F). The date of birth must be exactly DDMMYYYY with no spaces, slashes, or hyphens. Also verify that the date of birth matches what is registered on the Income Tax portal — not necessarily what appears on your Aadhaar.
